Ticked or tested? Proving your team understands their training
Completion rates tell you who clicked through. Here’s how to find out who learned something.
Reading a policy and understanding it are two very different things. Every care home manager knows this. Yet for years, the only proof most homes have had is a signature on a sheet.
That’s why we have built a new quiz engine into Boost Policy. It helps carers check and build their understanding of the policies that matter to their role. It also gives managers clear evidence that their team really knows what to do.
The problem with “read and sign”
In many care homes, staff are asked to read a policy and then sign to say they have done so. It’s quick and easy, but it doesn’t tell you very much.
A signature can’t show whether someone skimmed the first page or read it all. It can’t show whether they understood it. And it certainly can’t show whether they would know what to do in a real situation, like a safeguarding concern or a medication error.
When an inspector asks a carer about a policy, a signature won’t help. Understanding will.
How the quiz engine works
The idea is simple. After reading a policy in Boost Policy, staff answer a short set of questions about it.
- Read the policy. Because Boost policies are written for each role, staff only read what is relevant to their job.
- Answer the questions. The questions check the key points, such as what to do, when to do it and who to tell.
- See the results. Every answer is tracked and stored, so managers can see who has completed a quiz and how they did.
If someone gets an answer wrong, that’s useful too. It shows exactly where a carer, or a whole team, may need more support.
Why verified questions matter
Some tools now use AI to make up quiz questions on the spot. It sounds clever, but it creates real problems. The questions change every time, nobody has checked them, and the results are often not tracked, stored or monitored. That makes them very hard to rely on as evidence.
We have taken a different approach. Every question in the Boost quiz engine is verified, so you can trust that it is accurate and relevant to the policy. Every answer is tracked, stored and reported on. That means you have a consistent, reliable record you can stand behind.
What it means for your home
For carers, the quizzes are a quick way to check their own knowledge. They help key points stick, and they build confidence for when an inspector asks a question.
For managers, the reports show who understands what. You can spot gaps early, target support where it’s needed and follow up in supervision.
For inspections, you have clear evidence that your team doesn’t just have access to policies, but actually understands them. That supports your answers to the “safe” and “well-led” questions, whether you are inspected by CQC in England or CIW in Wales.
Read it, understand it, prove it
Policies only protect people when staff understand them. With the new quiz engine, Boost Policy helps your team learn what matters and gives you the evidence to show it.
